Celebrating Bert – 21 Years' Outstanding Service, Countless Jokes, Questionable Barra

Happy 21st (Work) Birthday, Bert!

Celebrating 21 Years of Legendary Service

Turning 21 is always a milestone — but 21 years of dedicated service? That’s something truly worth celebrating.

Today, we raise a toast to Sir Bert Woodward — the self-proclaimed Big Kahuna — who this November marks an incredible 21 years with Programmed Commercial Painting.

Since day one, Bert has shown up with dedication, consistency and a cool head under the blazing Darwin sun, all wrapped in his signature no-fuss style. Known for rock-solid customer relationships and results that speak for themselves, he’s become a pillar of the team and a trusted partner across the Top End.

A Darwin Icon
Bert’s routine is as reliable as sunrise — and just as effective. Whether he’s navigating tough market conditions, securing new business or strengthening long-standing partnerships, his professionalism never wavers. His work ethic, built on experience, respect and quiet confidence, has earned him legendary status (his jokes… slightly less so).

He first joined Programmed after being “poached to overhaul the Darwin team.” As Bert puts it, “It just felt right.”

And while the Territory heat might knock even the toughest of us, Bert soldiers on — making it look easy at work, then somehow still finding the energy to hit the golf course, chase barra, spend time with family and offer respite support for the equally impressive Pete the Pirate.

More Than Just the Numbers
Over two decades, Bert’s legacy has been about more than revenue. From Branch Manager to Senior Business Development Manager, he’s been a mentor, a sounding board and a steady presence in a fast-paced industry.

He helped shape the success of the Darwin branch — taking it from $60k EBIT when he first joined to over $1 million multiple times. Along the way, he has collected an impressive list of accolades, including:

Official honours:

  • Multiple individual sales awards
  • Several Branch of the Year titles
  • Top Salesperson across Programmed Australia
  • President of the Miles Million Dollar Club

Unofficial but equally iconic titles:

  • The Big Kahuna
  • Territory Top Dog
  • Darwin’s answer to Rex Hunt

And of course, he still finds time to offer his trademark wisdom:
“The squeaky wheel gets the oil — and sometimes that works in your favour.”

What the Team Says
Bert is super consistent — he’s got it all worked out. Two hours in the Darwin heat, doing all the measuring himself — that would kill the average person. He’s a legend for what he can do… but a crap fisherman.”

Bert’s routine never changes, and that’s the magic. His results are unmatched.

Bert turns customers into friends and friends into family. We fight and disagree on work stuff regularly, but make no mistake — without Bert’s long-term commitment, Darwin Commercial Painting wouldn’t be the powerhouse it is today. He’s more than a workmate; he’s one of my best mates.

Why He Stays

“In the beginning it was just a job. Over the years it’s become an addiction — the relationships you build with colleagues, customers and contacts, and the buzz you still get from winning a big job and delivering something the customer loves.”
Bert thrives on a challenge — “nutting out the difficult proposals, finding an edge over competitors” — and he’s never walked away from a tricky job.

Outside the Office

When he does switch off, Bert can usually be found fishing for the mighty barra, playing golf or spending time with family. Through Programmed, he’s also ticked off a few unforgettable moments — from the AFL Grand Final to overseas travel in South Africa.

Cheers to You, Bert

This 21-year milestone, Programmed is proud recognise Bert for everything he’s contributed — loyalty, results, laughs, lessons and a whole lot of heart.

Happy 21st, Bert — we’re lucky to have you.

Here’s to the years behind you, the success still ahead, and maybe — just maybe — another monster barra or a hole-in-one right around the corner.
