Global Recycling Day 2026 - Don’t Think Waste. Think Opportunity!

Mar 18, 2026 9:19:06 AM | Culture & Community Global Recycling Day 2026 - Don’t Think Waste. Think Opportunity!

Raising awareness about how we can all contribute to a more sustainable business and future ♻️

18th March is Global Recycling Day, a day dedicated to celebrating recycling and raising awareness about how we can all contribute to a more sustainable business and future.

So far in the 2025 financial year, our business has diverted 16.7% of core operational waste and 17.8% of service delivery waste from landfill. This data is available through PowerBI and helps us track our progress. As we move through the remainder of FY2025 and into FY2026, we will continue strengthening our waste data capture, ensuring all waste streams are accurately recorded. While also identifying opportunities to increase our waste diversion and recycling performance across the business.

WA Burswood Office Waste diversion improvement

The Burswood office has made a major sustainability upgrade by moving from their previous waste provider, JJs, to our PERSOL | Programmed preferred provider, Veolia.

This change has introduced Co-Mingling Recycling across the office, meaning waste that previously went straight to landfill is now being properly recycled. This change has also introduced more comprehensive and transparent waste data for office improvements and support.

To support this, all personal desk bins have also been removed, encouraging correct waste sorting, reducing unwanted pests, and improving office cleanliness. Early results show a reduction in landfill waste (more recycling happening) and a cleaner, more sustainable workspace.

Preferred Providers

We know it can be hard to find the right businesses to work with, as there are so many options. The Group Procurement team has created a preferred vendors list on the IMS, covering a range of services and materials, including Green Procurement and Social Procurement. These vendors have been reviewed for good data capture and support, but if you know of any others, please submit your suggestions to Procurement for review.

Veolia

veolia

Veolia is a global leader in waste management, recycling, and resource recovery. In Australia, Veolia provides comprehensive waste services for businesses, including recycling, organics, and hazardous waste, ensuring materials are processed responsibly and diverted from landfill wherever possible.

Cleanaway

cleanaway

Cleanaway is one of Australia’s leading waste management and recycling companies, providing services across both public and private sectors. They help organisations reduce waste, improve sustainability, and support a circular economy, with a focus on safe and compliant waste handling.

While these providers primarily support our Australian operations, we are currently reviewing our New Zealand waste providers to see where services can be streamlined and more clearly communicated across teams.

Proper recycling helps reduce waste, protect the environment, and support a circular economy. If you are ever unsure about what can be recycled or which provider to use, please reach out to the Sustainability Team, Procurement Team, or your SCOP member, or see our Toolbox Talk – Waste Reduction. Let’s all do our part to support recycling and make a real difference at work.

Sincerely,

The Sustainability Team
