What are you working safely for?

What are you working safely for?

When talking about workplace safety, many of us probably think of the practical things that help keep us safe such as understanding hazards, following procedures and applying the right controls. But what helps us put these things into action at work every day is our reason why. That’s the foundational element we’re focusing on in week one of Safe Work Month – For Life.

We all have different reasons for coming to work, and different things waiting for us when the working day is over. It might be family, friends, hobbies, working on something you love, or just enjoying your freedom outside of work.

Whatever it is, it’s worth protecting, and it helps us to put into perspective why the decisions we make at work matter.

**Making safety personal**

At work, we’re guided by practical procedures and controls to help us manage risk. This week is an opportunity to think about the reasons behind them.

Safety might feel like something that belongs in the workplace, but the consequences of getting it wrong don’t end when we leave work. An injury can affect what someone is able to do when they get home. Tragically, we also know that workplace incidents can result in someone not going home at all.

A serious incident can change a person’s life, and the lives of their family, friends and workmates.

That’s why For Life draws it all back to the personal – what’s your reason?

Starting the conversation

This week, we’re taking a moment to think about what working safely means to us personally. What do you look forward to when you finish work? Who are the people you want to get home to? What are the parts of your life you wouldn’t want an injury at work to take away from you? Everyone’s answers will be different, and that’s the point.

There will be opportunities this week to talk about For Life with your teams and for people to consider their own reasons for working safely. If you’re leading a toolbox talk or team conversation, try to give people the space to think about the question in their own way rather than looking for a particular answer. You can use the toolbox talk below to help start these conversations.

This month, we’re taking safety back to what really matters: people. We’ll explore how the decisions we make each day help protect our lives, our health and our future, so we can go home safely to the people and things that matter to us. Because safety is for life.
