Celebrating culture, community and connection at Melbourne Water

5 December 2025 12:00:01 AM | Programmed Facility Management Celebrating culture, community and connection at Melbourne Water

Celebrating what makes us different and what brings us together.

This Friday, we share two stories about our Brooklyn Pumping Station team coming together to celebrate the many cultures, stories, and identities that make our workplace such a vibrant community - from a colourful Diwali lunch to proudly receiving the NAIDOC Team of the Year Award. A big thanks to Kathleen Locke for these submissions!

Diwali celebrations

"Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning “row of lights.” It marks the triumph of light over darkness, of good over evil. Though Diwali traditions vary according to region and religion, the myths and historical stories behind the holiday share themes of justice and liberation.

Although not technically a Monday, the Melbourne Water contract team based at Brooklyn Pumping Station had their annual Diwali celebration on 27th October and multicultural lunch. We were treated to some beautiful Indian foods however, people brought foods from all over the world for all to enjoy. We all left with very full bellies.

It was a great opportunity for the team to come together, share stories of their heritage and just have a good chat.

Plans are already being discussed for next year with ideas floating around for what people are bringing next year."

NAIDOC Team of the Year Award presentation

The Melbourne Water contract was pleased to accept the NAIDOC Team of the Year Award at Brooklyn Pumping Station this week. Nat Hickcox attended to present the award to our Contract Services Manager, Alanna Wright.

We celebrated by sharing a delicious breakfast provided by one of our new Indigenous vendors, Jarrah Catering. It is a great feeling knowing that we are being recognised for our continued efforts.
