Breaking the cycle through employment
For many young people in Banksia Hill, gaining employment after release can be a significant challenge. Our program aims to bridge this gap by providing hands-on training in key trade areas such as painting and maintenance, cleaning and groundskeeping.
Through training, mentorship, and practical work experience, these young individuals develop technical skills as well as skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and workplace readiness.
A real impact for real people
The Channel 10 News coverage showcased the positive changes this initiative is making. Young participants shared their stories, reflecting on how the program is helping them develop confidence and motivation for a better future. Hearing from the participants directly is incredibly moving, and really demonstrates the profound impact this program has had.
One young participant shared, “before this program, I didn’t really see a future for myself. Now, I have skills that can get me a real job when I get out. It makes me feel like I have a second chance.”
Another added, “having someone believe in me and teach me real skills has been life-changing. It’s not just about learning a trade; it’s about knowing I can do something positive with my life."
Programmed team members working closely with the initiative also spoke about the importance of mentorship, reinforcing how employment is a key factor in reducing recidivism.
“Giving these young people real skills means giving them a pathway to employment and stability," said Ben Hasler, Programmed’s Justice Reintegration Team Leader. "We’re not just teaching trades; we’re helping them rebuild their lives.”
