Rising above to safely tackle tough roofs with drones in NZ

At Programmed, we’re always exploring smarter, safer ways to care for the facilities our communities rely on.

Towards the end of 2025, our NZ team trialled drone spray technology at two unique sites, Pah Homestead and Waikumete Cemetery, to treat roofs that are traditionally difficult and risky to access.

At Pah Homestead, the high pitch slate roofing and fragile surfaces meant a non contact approach was essential. Using drones allowed us to complete the treatment safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption, even around a busy on site café.

At Waikumete Cemetery, a large heritage site with multiple buildings, multi tiered roof structures and two central towers too high and delicate for manual access, the same drone technology proved invaluable. The roofs include a mix of slate tiles, concrete, TPO and membrane surfaces, each requiring careful, precise application. As an operating cemetery, a low-profile and quick solution was essential to ensure sensitive services were not impacted.

It’s another example of how innovation, safety and care go hand in hand at Programmed. Well done team!
